The
Salvation Army Bethesda Centre is designed
to provide support and education in a
residential setting for pregnant adolescents
up to 17 years old. Older applicants are
considered on an individual basis and may be
admitted on the basis of extenuating
circumstances.
The
Centre accommodates 14 girls - 8 prenatal, 4
postnatal and 2 emergency beds. In addition,
there are facilities for up to 6 babies.
Residents are able to come to the Centre as
soon as the pregnancy has been confirmed by
a doctor and may remain in the group home
program until the baby is 6 months old,
based on the availability of space.
While at
Bethesda, the residents are involved in a
variety of programs. During the day, the
majority of the residents attend the on-site
W.D. Sutton School. This provides them with
an opportunity to continue with their
education and helps to develop the academic
skills needed for success. Residents are
also required to attend programs implemented
by Bethesda staff. These programs include
lifeskills teaching, independent living
skills, a Choices program and a variety of
parenting programs. Residents receive
individual and group instruction from a
public health nurse as well as individual
counselling by a clinician from an outside
agency. On site medical services are
provided by a family physician who provides
care throughout the pregnancy and postnatal
period. Residents are also involved in
individual plan of care sessions. All
programs are aimed at providing the
residents with the skills and knowledge
required for successful, independent living.
Bethesda
has a second stage program of
semi-independent apartments, where youth and
their child(ren) may stay until baby is
approximately 2 years of age. In this
program, they have more responsibilities and
freedom, while still having access to
supports when needed.
An
on-site, licensed childcare centre provides
care for infants, toddlers and preschool age
children. Infants can start attending
childcare at the age of 2 weeks. This
childcare centre is open to the youth of
Bethesda as well as community children.
The
residents of Bethesda are adolescent girls,
primarily aged 17 years and under, although
it is possible for those over 18 years of
age to enter the Program in situations in
which there is a risk to either the baby or
mom. The program extends to the babies born
to the residents at Bethesda.
